About the Organisation

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services LTD (KAMS) is a well-established regional Aboriginal community controlled health service, founded in 1986, which provides centralised advocacy and resource support for 6 independent member services, as well as providing direct clinical services in a further 6 remote Aboriginal communities across the region.

KAMS has successfully delivered high-quality, accessible comprehensive primary health care services over its 30 years of operation and has provided innovation and national leadership in areas such as health information management and evidence-based best practice in primary health care.

About the Region

The Kimberley region is located in the northern part of Western Australia and covers about 421,000 square kilometres. The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is around 37,000. In addition to the sealed Route 1 which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road, air or sea.

About the Opportunity

KAMS now has an opportunity for a Social and Emotional Wellbeing Worker - Outreach  to join their friendly, multidisciplinary team in Broome WA, on a full-time basis. In this role, you will focus on providing support to young people aged 10 to 25 years in remote communities where there is a KAMS clinic, to strengthen their social and emotional wellbeing in a variety of ways including connection to health services and culturally appropriate activities. This position will support and run activities which promote education, prevention and early intervention for young people with social and emotional wellbeing issues and will requires regular ongoing trips to the Dampier Peninsula.

Some of your key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Engage with young people aged 10 – 25 year in selected remote communities
  • Work in a collaborative way, liaising and partnering with the KAMS remote clinics, community members, schools, local service providers and visiting specialist services.
  • Assist young people to access a range of services to improve their social and emotional wellbeing. This includes activities targeted at:
    • Physical Health
    • Mental health and Wellbeing
    • Sexual Health and healthy relationships
    • Alcohol and other drug awareness and harm reduction
  • Develop initiatives and strategies to assist in engaging young people aged 10 – 25 years
  • Provide clinic staff with support and guidance about ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families to support better access and outcomes for the clinic teams. The nature of the support and guidance offered will be determined by the workers level of comfort and within the parameters of the workers own cultural protocols.

To be successful in this role, you will need a qualification and experience in Youth Work, Aboriginal Health Work, Social Work or equivalent and experience working with Aboriginal people in the area of social and emotional wellbeing.

Please note: It is a requirement that successful candidates hold a current drivers licence and be willing to undergo a National Police Check prior to employment with KAMS.

  • Annual airfares subsidy to the value of $1,285 p.a. (after 12 months of service);
  • District allowance of $2,920 (single) or $5,840(double);
  • Electricity allowance $1,440;
  • Accommodation allowance $7,800; and
  • 5 weeks leave p.a.
